Welcome to the Bedford Columns, Virginia’s most premier event destination nestled in the Blue Ridge Moutains. Iconic columns, stunning gardens and the exquisite interior create a dramatic backdrop for extraordinary weddings, receptions, parties, luncheons, workshops and overnight stays.
Built in 1848, the Bedford Columns has been a symbol of beauty for many years. It orginially served as a college prepatory school for boys with Walter Reed of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. actuallyattending the school for a short peroid of time. His father served as the headmaster. During the Civil War, the building was adapted to a Confederate Hospital housing up to two hundred wounded soldiers at a time.
After the the Civil War, Dr. Walter Lyle of Bedford purchased the building for his wife, Essie, adding the elegant columns and spacious patios to form an expansive estate. Lyle’s Pharmacy is remembered to this day as a fixture in the city of Bedford.
Dr. Lyle left the estate to a Trust which later provided the space as a Trust Home for women. Over the years, the home evolved into a senior community providing assisted living care to the Bedford area. Brian and Vickie Runk purchased the estate in 1993 as part of Runk and Pratt Senior Living Communities continuing to provide the superior assisted living services that the company is known for throughout the Lynchburg area. Fulfilling a dream of many years, Brian and Vickie Runk decided to renovate the Columns to become a magnificent venue, showcasing its original splendor with opulent designs, glittering chandeliers and beautiful artistry.
The renovations have allowed the community and surrounding areas to come to celebrate momentous occasions, giving their guests the opportunity to experience the elegance of the past in a modernly luxurious setting.
