Built in 1848, the Bedford Columns has been a symbol of rich history for many decades. It originally served as a college preparatory school for boys in the Bedford area. During the Civil War, the building was adapted into a Confederate Hospital housing up to two hundred wounded soldiers at a time. Once the war ended, Dr. Walter Lyle of Bedford purchased the building for his wife, Essie, adding the elegant columns and spacious patios to form an expansive estate. Lyle’s Pharmacy is remembered to this day as a fixture in the town of Bedford.

Dr. Lyle eventually left the estate to a trust which dedicated the space as a Trust Home for women. Over the years, the home evolved into a senior community providing assisted living care to the Bedford area. Brian and Vickie Runk purchased the estate in 1993 as part of Runk & Pratt Senior Living Communities, continuing to provide the superior assisted living services that the company is known for throughout the Lynchburg area.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Brian and Vickie chose to transform the property into The Bedford Columns, a magnificent wedding venue showcasing the estate’s original splendor with opulent designs, glittering chandeliers, and beautiful artistry. The renovations have afforded the community and surrounding areas a place to celebrate momentous occasions, allowing brides, grooms, and guests the opportunity to experience the elegance of the past in a luxurious, modern setting.
